Earlier this year I pulled out hundreds of white irises. In a garden bed in front of the house, and planted natives, focusing on grevillias and natives with red flowers. I added a wildflower seed mix. From my front door it looks beautiful. From the street if you blink you miss it, it doesn’t attract the eye. I was thinking of adding a border to attract the eye, doesn’t have to be native, but bird attracting is important. Thank you in advance
How can I give a native flower bed more street appeal?

I wouldn’t plant a border, Jenny. I think ‘formalising’ it will fight with your intentions. Without doubt, I think the strongest way to add conviction to a planting like this is to add some strong design elements, such as the spheres or spires in Kurt Wilkinson’s garden (google him, or check him out on insta, on in the search on this page). It’s amazing how you can add both power and unity to a mixed planting by doing so
Hi Jenny,
You could also add some structure with some clipped natives too, Philotheca clips up really well and still flowers nicely and Westringia has some cultivars designed to stay really dense and they flower even when clipped too. Pycnosorus globosus (Billy Buttons) is a great native for something interesting and Anigozanthos (Kangaroo Paw) is always fun too.
