Hi, I spent a lot of time and effort planting huge pots around our home but there is nothing I can do to stop the dreadful mess. These large pots have bougainvillea planted in pots inside these larger decorative ones and saucers in side to bloc the mess running out but obviously I have just caused trapped water. Hence the very moldy pots. The 2 that are not in the direct weather are fine but the other 2 are destroying our outside marble tiles and help would be appreciated. Please know I have tried exterior saucers but these just overflow and go moldy as well.
Hello Kristy, if that pot was in my yard, I’d be tempted to raise it up firstly on 3 pot feet to improve the poor drainage that’s causing your pot to go green. Don’t be tempted to use 4 feet as 3 will be more stable. If you feel the pot still isn’t draining, gently tip it on it side, perhaps onto a soft surface & use a prong like a tent peg to poke & loosen up the blockage; when you water, it should drain through. Secondly, place the pot & feet on a small square paver so that water that’s laiden with potting mix tannins etc will tend to stain the small square rather than what’s underneath. The whole look of your pot on a small plinth will look a little more formal as well. Just a thought 🙂
I guess you should improve the drainage part. Because it is the root of the problem.
