Hi all,
I'm based in Melbourne and planted two Magnolia grandiflora 'St Mary' Pleached trees in late 2018 and I'm struggling to figure out what has gone wrong with the obvious one on the left-hand corner. I'm guessing the other one is closer to the house and cops less wind. Should I get rid of it or persist? Some of the leaves curl and brown on the tips. Thinking of removing the Lambs Ears below as they keep getting out of control and probably suffocate the base of the plant. Has anyone had this problem before?
Thanks
Mary
Should the Magnolia go?

I would have doubts the Lamb’s Ears are influencing the diminishing health of your Magnolia. Soil tests can be a handy reveal-all (Magnolia prefers the acid end of the scale). I get a bit twitchy when I see metal planters & edges close to plants; they can fry sensitive rootlets – I have a lot of this edging & have learned this through personal experience!
Hi Mary, it won’t be the lambs ears. The problem is impossible to identify with any certainty, of course, from the pic, but the very first thing I’d be looking at, given those symptoms, is whether water gathers or sits in this corner. These magnolias really want good drainage.
